Attractions during the Manali Trip

Manali (Modern Part)

The bustling new part of Manali is the heart of the city’s business and transport activities. It includes the bus station, the Tibetan Quarter, multiple markets, shopping arcades, and various stores. While the central part of the city is densely built with concrete structures, its natural charm lies in the outskirts. Despite the hustle and bustle, it’s worth visiting a few times to experience the lively atmosphere.

The Main Tourist Street: The Mall

The Mall is the main street in modern Manali, a partially pedestrian area filled with restaurants, eateries, tiny shops, and large showrooms of famous brands. It’s the activity centre, with souvenir shops, travel agencies, and a bus station. The street runs along the Beas River, with the northern end leading to Old Manali and Vashisht and the southern end connecting to Kullu.

Temple of the Goddess Hadimba

The Hadimba Temple is high up in the city, surrounded by an old forest. Built-in 1553, it is dedicated to the goddess Hadimba. You can get there by motor rickshaw or a 20-minute walk uphill from the central square.

Buddhist Temple in the Tibetan Quarter

Just 100 meters from the bustling Mall, the Tibetan Quarter offers a peaceful retreat. Here, you’ll find a small Buddhist temple and monastery built in the 1960s by Tibetan refugees. The monastery courtyard houses a manufactory producing hand-made woollen carpets.

Parks in Manali

Manali has several well-kept parks along the Beas River, featuring centuries-old Himalayan cedars. Three main parks have playgrounds and minimal tourist infrastructure. The most exciting park lies between new and old Manali, featuring a birdhouse with rare and beautiful birds.

Old Manali

Old Manali, a few kilometres from the modern city, is much calmer and more beautiful. It attracts Western tourists, especially those who migrate from Goa and other southern resorts. The village is colourful and serene and favoured by hippies and creative souls.

Temple of Manu

Old Manali hosts the Temple of Manu, which is dedicated to the Indian Noah Manu. It’s the only temple in India where Manu is worshipped. The current temple structure is relatively recent but believed to be built on the site of an older one.

Hippie-style cafes and Restaurants

Old Manali’s eateries resemble Goan shacks, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The most famous cafe, People Cafe, mirrors the vibe of Goan cafes, offering a laid-back experience with great food and music.

Vashisht Temple

Vashisht Village, just a short distance from Manali towards Naggar, is a vibrant and charming destination known for its attractions. The Vashisht Mandir, dedicated to the Vedic sage Vasishta Muni, is a key highlight, featuring a unique bathhouse with hot water from sulfur springs. The village also has less-visited temples dedicated to Shiva and Rama. Additionally, Vashisht offers a public bath where locals and visitors can experience communal bathing, emphasising equality and community spirit.

Jogini Waterfall

A short walk from the village school through a cedar forest leads to the Jogini Waterfall, a popular and picturesque spot.
