About this tour

About Manali Shimla Tour

Manali

Manali, a charming hill station in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and is a favoured destination for domestic and international tourists. Located approximately 1950 meters above sea level, according to Hindu mythology, Manali is named after Manu, the ancient lawgiver appointed by Brahma, the Creator. It is believed that Manu arrived in this region after seven cycles of creation and destruction, making it a revered site. Manali is also considered the sacred home of the seven sages, or “Sapt Rishis,” central to Hindu tradition. Visitors can discover historic sites like the Hidimba Devi Temple, connected to the Mahabharata, or immerse themselves in the spiritual serenity of nearby monasteries.

Manali is a paradise for adventure seekers, offering activities like paragliding, trekking, skiing, and white-water rafting. The Solang Valley, in particular, is a popular spot for adrenaline-pumping experiences. The town’s location also makes it a gateway to other significant destinations, including the scenic Rohtang Pass, which leads to the Lahaul and Spiti regions, and the road to Ladakh.

Manali’s rich history is intertwined with both mythology and the colonial era. The British, drawn by the region’s natural beauty and favourable climate, made significant contributions to the town’s development, including the introduction of apple farming, which remains a key attraction.

Shimla

Shimla, often called the “Queen of the Hills,” is the capital of Himachal Pradesh (Summer Capital) and one of India’s most popular hill stations. Nestled in the northwestern Himalayas at an elevation of 2,205 meters, The town was once a tiny village and became prominent after the British discovered it in 1819. Drawn by its refreshing climate, the British established Shimla as their summer capital in 1864, and it quickly evolved into a centre of social and political life during the British Raj.

The city’s name is derived from Shyamala Devi, a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Kali. Shimla’s history can be traced back to the early 19th century, when it was part of the Kingdom of Nepal. The region came under British control following the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816) and the signing of the Treaty of Sugauli. By 1830, the British formally acquired Shimla, transforming it into a vibrant hill station with theatres, churches, and schools.

Shimla’s colonial legacy is evident in its Tudor-style and neo-Gothic architecture, with notable landmarks such as the Viceregal Lodge, Christ Church, and the Mall Road. The Kalka-Shimla railway line, completed in 1903, further enhanced the town’s accessibility and popularity. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the Mall Road, explore the bustling bazaars, or take in the breathtaking vistas from various vantage points around the city. Despite its growth and modernisation, Shimla retains much of its colonial charm, uniquely blending history, culture, and natural beauty.
