Bir Billing, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Valley, is a hill station renowned for its striking natural beauty and adventure sports. Positioned at around 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level, it is famous worldwide for paragliding, with Billing as the launch site and Bir as the landing zone. The area enjoys a temperate climate with cool summers and snowy winters, making it a desirable year-round destination. Beyond paragliding, Bir Billing provides excellent trekking and camping opportunities, offering trails with panoramic Himalayan views. The region also features several Tibetan monasteries, including the Chokling and Sherab Ling Monasteries, highlighting its rich cultural heritage. The surrounding tea gardens enhance its scenic allure, while the local cuisine offers a delightful blend of Himachali and Tibetan flavours. Conveniently accessible by road and with Kangra Airport nearby, Bir Billing Package is perfect for those seeking adventure and serenity in the Himalayan region.
Brief Overview of Bir Billing Package
Bir Billing, a picturesque village in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, is renowned as the “Paragliding Capital of India.” Located in the Joginder Nagar Valley, Bir is the landing site, while Billing, 14 km away, is the takeoff point for paragliding. Known for its ideal conditions, Bir Billing is considered one of the world’s top paragliding destinations, especially during the October-November and March-June seasons. Besides paragliding, visitors can enjoy camping, trekking, and mountain biking. The village also boasts a Tibetan refugee settlement with Buddhist monasteries, making it a hub for ecotourism, spiritual studies, and meditation. Paragliding activities are regulated by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department and two associations: the Billing Paragliding Association (BPA) and the Billing Aero Paragliding Association (BAPA).
Historical Significance
Bir Billing’s history as a prominent paragliding destination began in the 1980s when French pilots identified the area for its favourable flying conditions and introduced hang gliding. However, due to the lack of infrastructure, carrying heavy equipment uphill to the takeoff point in Billing took time, necessitating the use of porters and mules. In the early 1990s, New Zealander pilot Bruce Mills introduced paragliding to Bir Billing, attracting many pilots and sparking local interest in the sport. By the 2000s, tandem paragliding was introduced, boosting commercial activity and providing employment opportunities for locals. Today, Bir Billing boasts over 200 tandem paragliding pilots, with nearly a hundred licensed by Himachal Tourism. The area gained international acclaim after hosting the Paragliding World Cup 2015, which saw pilots from 130 countries participate, solidifying its status as a premier paragliding destination.
In addition to its renown for paragliding, Bir is also notable for its Tibetan refugee settlement. In 1966, the third Neten Chokling, an incarnate lama of the Nyingma tradition in Tibetan Buddhism, established the settlement in Bir with the support of international aid. He purchased over 200 acres of land, providing homes for 300 Tibetan families and starting the construction of the Neten Monastery. After he died in 1973, his eldest son, Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche, completed his father’s vision. The fourth Neten Chokling incarnation, born in 1973 in Bhutan, was brought to Bir at a young age and eventually took full responsibility for the Pema Ewam Chögar Gyurme Ling Monastery in 2004. This settlement has become a significant centre for Tibetan culture, spiritual studies, and meditation.
